How to properly pack your suitcase

For some, packing a suitcase can be an overwhelming task, as it requires a lot of thinking and planning. In fact, a lot of packing stress stems from the anxiety of forgetting a necessary item, or from not really knowing what you´re going to need during your trip. (¿what if it rains the whole time? What if you end up taking too warm clothing? What if you end up bringing the wrong pair of shoes?) We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to end up packing our luggage in the most perfect way possible. As a traveler who’s been to 10 different countries, i will share with you some helpful packing techniques to ease the burden of putting the very right items in your bag.

1. Gather your clothes and put them on top of your bed

Seeing the clothes and items you need to pack in your suitcase all in one place helps you have a clear vision of what might be missing or what might be unnecessary. Gather all what you believe you may need in your trip, then edit down your choices so you don’t overpack.

2. Decide what will be your traveling outfit

Setting apart the outfit you are going to wear for your trip before you start packing is so beneficial, it saves you a lot of stress and allows you to wear the bulkier items that might take big space in your suitcase

3. Roll your clothes

Some of you who prefer folding your items may disagree with me but, rolling your clothes has been proving me to be the best way to pack your bag since my traveling journey started. Unlike folding, rolling your clothes allows you to see all what you have packed and also easily bring what you need for the day without disordering other ítems.

Tightly roll wrinkle-resistant garments such as t-shirts, cotton pants and jeans, and place them along the base of the bag.

4. Place folded items on the top

Fill the length of the bag by draping longer pieces like pants and skirs, stiffer or wrinkle-prone items must also be folded and put on the top of the rolled clothes. This is one of my favorite parts of packing a bag because it gives you a sensation of wrapping up and finishing your work.

5. Add smaller items

The corners and crannies of your suitcase must be filled by smaller items such as socks, underwear or rolled tank tops.

6. Choose shoes wisely

Your shoes choice will vary depending on the season, the occasion or the activities you are planning to include in your trip, but i recommend wearing the heaviest pair en route, and packing the others along the sides of the suitcase.

7. Get a travel toiletry bag

A toiletry bag is a a perfect space saving item where your toothpaste, toothbrush, perfume, creams and essentials can be in one place and save you a lot space and disorder in your suitcase.

Wherever you are headed, you’re going to have a great time! Just make sure you think through your list of activities beforehand so that you’re able to bring everything you need and pick the right luggage. And pack light if you can using this ultimate packing checklist. It always helps with mobility. And remember, you’re a traveler: Respect the people and places you go to visit. Respect their customs, tip accordingly, try and learn their language, and truly immerse yourself in the culture. Travel changes us to be better than we were by opening our eyes and giving us newfound respect.
